I bought this to take my own blood pressure with. My cardiologist recommended a Welch-Allyn Sphygmomanometer in the $70.00 range. I bought the Welch-Allyn Durashock Sphygmomanometer Adult Cuff - Model Ds45-11 for $73.06. This is a very high quality unit; it's made in Germany and has a 10 year calibration warranty, laser-engraved dial, and 360 degree rotation of the dial once it is snapped onto the cuff. The only trick with this unit is to buy the one with a bigger or smaller cuff if you have really big or small arms respectively. My cardiologist also recommended a 3M Littmann stethoscope in the $40.00 range. I bought the 3M Littmann "Select" model for $43.07. This really is an amazing stethoscope, especially for the money. As a novice user, the only trick is to read the instructions and realize that the metal earpieces have to angle forward and completely seal in your ears. If you angle the ear pieces backwards, you can't hear anything at all! These two units cost only about $115.00 together and offer a very high quality set of equipment for taking blood pressure. There's lots of cheap junk being listed on amazon for stethoscopes and sphygmomanometers, but I think the value is quite poor going super cheap, not to mention whatever implications there would be for inaccurate or difficult readings.Looks to me like this Littman/Welch-Allyn kit should last for decades and remain accurate. Also, I've been leery about the accuracy and repeatability of the digital units, and my doctor agreed. He said when BP measurements really matter, this is the best way to go and he felt the home digital units weren't all that great. When I mentioned the fancy, expensive digital units in the hospital, he said he didn't really particularly trust those either.
