I can't believe I'm just discovering this awesome band! Well, that's because I just recently, finally listened to Pestilence. Pestilence really impressed me with their first few albums. What particularly impressed me was Pestilence's early singer, Martin Van Drunen. He reminds me of a cross between my favorite death metal vocalists, At the Gates/Disfear's Tompa Lindberg & Obituary's John Tardy. He sounds like he's in spiritual agony, traversing the dark night of the soul. Now this early Asphyx release is Drunen's band after he left Pestilence, and this band is phenomenal. This album is pretty aggressive, with a pinch of doom. I think they incorporated more doom as they went on in their career, but here they are amped up. This band, like Pestilence, is up there with the very best DM I have ever heard. I would put them up against Death, Obituary or Bolt Thrower any day of the week, and I think Asphyx would be the one left standing, even against the legendary, seminal Death.
