These are solid, polished, stainless steel. They are much more substantial than cheaper silverware sets. What this means is with fork tips, they stay straight, when you dig in the ice cream with the spoon it doesn't bend, or if you pry with the knife. This is my second set. My first set I've had for 2 years and it looks as good as the day we bought it so I decided to get a second set. Once when I was making a smoothie I was sticking a spoon in the blender to push the fruits in, and the blender blade snagged on the spoon. I took the spoon out and it had a slight nick, but it was the same solid steel underneath so I just polished it with emery cloth and it looked like new again. So I think these are worth every penny, they will last a lifetime and will be the last set of silverware you get if they're still "in style" 100 years from now, which as elegant and simple as they are I don't see how they couldn't be. A great investment and worth every penny. When I visit my mom, she is cheap, and has 50cent silverware, I can't stand it, they feel like they will bend like a paper clip when I use my fork to cut a piece of bread etc. These onida are solid, and eating with them is a pleasure. The only downside is it's made me realize how cheaply made cheap silverware really is.Hope that helps.
